This is an excellent way to teach from the scriptures. I learned this in my seminary teacher training meeting and feel it is so good I want to share it with others. You don't have to be a seminary teacher to use it. You can do this at home in family home evening or in any class you teach at church. First, an explanation of the brown sugar method. Oatmeal mush is good but sometimes it can be rather bland. But if you add a little brown sugar it really livens things up. So we are going to be looking for "brown sugar" words in the scriptures.
Here it is:
Brown Sugar Method
1. Find the Scripture
2. Look for the Message
3. Clarify the Message
4. Apply the Message
5. Testify of the Message
So here is how it works.
Here is a scripture I was reading today.
1 Nephi 17:3
And thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness.
We have just done number 1. We have found and read the scripture.
Now for number 2. What is this verse saying? I think this verse is saying that if we keep the commandments of God He will help us do the things He has asked us to do. It's very similar to 1 Nephi 3:7, I will go and do.
Now for number 3. This is where we look for the brown sugar words in the verse. I will just list some of the ones I see. You may see others.
commandments of God must be fulfilled
he doth nourish them
strengthen them
provide means
accomplish
On to number 4. To apply this to my life I understand that if I keep the commandments of God He will help me do what ever He asks me to do. If I don't keep the commandments I won't receive that help from Him.
And now number 5. I have the opportunity in a few weeks to listen to God's prophet. He will have messages just for me. There may be some things I will be asked to do that may seem hard but if I ask in faith and keep my covenants I know I will have God's help to accomplish what ever he asks of me.

Mary, thank you so much for sharing this! I have recently been called as the 1st counselor in RS and so have the duty to encourage and strengthen our teachers. I can't wait to share this with them. I know it will give them some guidance as to how to use the scriptures in their lessons.
This will be very helpful for teaching our class too.
